ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo analyze the timeliness of health science popularization during the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and its correlation with the epidemic situation and policies. MethodsThe original reports of health science popularization by 26 major media in Shanghai during the COVID19 outbreak between January 19 and March 25 of 2020 were retrieved, and the timeliness of the number of reports, media sources and categories, and contents were analyzed. ResultsDuring the epidemic of COVID-19, public media reported timely. Online media accounted for 63.35%, and text-based reports accounted for 85.90%. There was a correlation between the trend of the number of reports and the development of COVID-19 and the prevention and control policy issued by the government. After the change in the epidemic or the release of policy, the number of reports increased. The top four topics were personal protection, disease treatment, healthy lifestyle and psychological health, accounting for 18.62%, 18.54%, 12.96% and 11.74%, respectively. Reports focused on different aspects at different stages of COVID-19 epidemic, and the number of reports tended to increase one week after the occurrence of major events. ConclusionDuring the COVID-19 epidemic, the coverage of health science on media is timely and targeted. For future similar public health emergencies, it is suggested to respond quickly to major events according to the trend, to carry out publicity timely, to innovate the report forms, and thus make it easy for the public to accept and implement.

ABSTRACT

Epimedii Folium,a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine, has the effect of tonifying kidney Yang, strengthening bones and treating rheumatism. However,in recent years, the number of reports on adverse reactions of Epimedii Folium and its Chinese patent medicines such as Xianling Gubao Capsules and Zhuanggu Guanjie Pills has been gradually increased, and the toxicity of Epimedii Folium has attracted more and more attention. In this article, the ancient and modern literature on Epimedii Folium was traced through a comprehensive and systematic literature analysis method. According to the 2015 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia,Epimedii Folium refers to the dried leaves of Epimedii Folium brevicomu,E. sugittutum,E. pubescens or E. koreuuum. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia also includes E. wushanense of Wushan Epimedium, which is the same plant variety as Epimedium. The study showed that there were differences in the geographical distribution, composition and toxicity among five species of Epimedium. This paper also explained the toxicity mechanism as well as efficacy enhancing and toxicity reducing effects of Epimedii Folium, and reported its related adverse reaction cases. Through a retrospective comparative study on the toxicity of the modern Chinese patent medicines Xianling Gubao Capsules and Zhuanggu Guanjie Pills containing Epimedii Folium,it was believed that Epimedii Folium had cardiovascular system toxicity,neurotoxicity,hepatotoxicity,long-term toxicity, acute toxicity, genotoxicity and special toxicity; its safe medication factors included patient syndrome, doctor factors, drug factors, processing and compatibility factors. Meanwhile, strategies were proposed to improve patient safety medication awareness, standardize Epimedii Folium varieties and quality supervision, and the toxicity of Epimedii Folium was studied, hoping to draw attention from scholars to the safety of Epimedii Folium, improve the safe use of Epimedii Folium, and prevent adverse reactions.

ABSTRACT

Qi, blood and the meridians are fundamental concepts in Chinese medicine (CM), which are components of the human body and maintain physiological function. Pathological changes of qi, blood and meridians may lead to discomfort and disease. Treatment with acupuncture or herbal medicine aims to regulate qi and blood so as to recover normal function of the meridians. This paper explores the nature of qi as well as compares and correlates them with the structures of the human body. We propose a conceptualization of qi as being similar to the interstitial fluid, and the meridians as being similar to interstitial space of low hydraulic resistance in the body. Hence, qi running in the meridians can be understood as interstitial fluid flowing via interstitial space of low hydraulic resistance.

ABSTRACT

Through the comprehensive and systematic research of domestic and overseas literature and information, we studied ancient original records on Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix and its toxicity, analyzed related adverse cases and the animal toxicity experiments in recent years, then systematically analyzed the safety of Aconitum and its preparations, and finally we summarized the clinical characteristics and potential risk factors related to the safety of Aconitum. A report on adverse events of Aconitum in 76 patients with myocardial damage and renal damage accounting for 53.9% and 42.1% respectively, indicated that the safety problems of Aconitum may be related to heart toxicity and liver-kidney toxicity. Aconitum had complex compositions, and based on the animal experiments, Aconitum decoction had the highest toxicity at 2 h, and it reduced significantly at 4 h, which showed that the toxic components mainly depend on the hydrolysis or the decomposition degree of diester diterpenoid alkaloids. According to the toxicity study, Aconitum toxicity might occur in cardiovascular system, nervous system, kidney, embryo, reproductive system, and it was contraindicated in pregnant women. So far, specific antidote for aconitine poisoning is still a blank. The key for treatment is to correct arrhythmia timely and effectively, maintain stable vital signs, and meanwhile, give gastric lavage, intravenous fluid infusion and other therapies. So we suggest that the basic study for Aconitum toxicology should be strengthened, and the pharmacology and mechanism of toxicity, as well as the mechanism of processing for raising efficiency and reducing toxicity, should be further clarified to determine the quantity-effect relationship and eliminate safety hazards in using Aconitum.

ABSTRACT

This article analyzed the clinical experience of Professor RAO Xiang-rong in the treatment of early diabetic kidney diseases (DKD) from the aspects of etiology, pathogenesis and methods of treatment prescriptions. Professor RAO believes that early DKD patients suffer from long-term eating disorders and like to eat high-salt, high-protein, high-fat, and high-calorie food, which results in the occlusion of middle Jiao, unruly dryness fire and retention of damp-heat, and then leads to the damage to spleen and kidney, qi and yin deficiency and blood stasis in meridians. He points out that the dryness-heat of middle Jiao is the core pathogenesis and puts forward the treatment concept of "Treating renal diabetes must first treat gastric diabetes".

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the immunomodulation of CCK8 on the Coxsackievirus B ( CVB )-attacked human peripheral blood plasmacytoid dendritic cells(pDC). Methods:Peripheral blood mononuclear cells of healthy volunteers were separated by Ficoll-Hypaque gradient density centrifugation. The pDC was separated and divided into five groups, which were the control group, CVB attacked group, the group of CCK8 treated after CVB attack, the group of PGE2 treated after CVB attack and the group of CCK8+PGE2 treated after CVB attack. 100-time TCID50 of CVB was applied for the attack on pDC. Real-time PCR and Immunofluorescence technique were employed to detect the expression of CCK1R/CCK2R mRNA and protein. Then, the expression levels of costimulatory molecules such as CD80,CD86,HLA-DR ligand, and the chemokine receptor CCR7 were evaluated by Flow Cytometry Analysis. The supernatants of pDCs were collected, and the content of IFN-α was determined by Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay. Results:CCK1R and CCK2R were co-expressed in human peripheral blood pDC,and both were significantly upregulated after CVB attack in vitro. Expression of CD80,CD86,HLA-DR and IFN-α were decreased in the CVB+CCK8 group compared with the CVB group, which suggested that CCK8 may reduce the CVB activation of pDC. Whereas expression of CD80,CD86,HLA-DR,CCR7 and IFN-α were increased in the CVB+PGE2 group compared with the CVB group, which suggested that PGE2 may increase the CVB activation of pDC in vitro. Conclusion:CCK8 repressed the CVB-attacked pDC,while PGE2 activated the CVB-attacked pDC.

ABSTRACT

The soluble guanylate cyclase (s GC) is a key signal transduction enzyme in the nitric oxide (NO) -sGC-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) pathway, which can be activated by NO and thus catalyzes the conversion of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) into the c GMP. As a second messenger, cGMP modulates the activity of downstream effectors, including the cGMP-dependent protein kinases (cGK), cGMP-dependent phosphodiesterases (PDE) and ion-gated channels, and ultimately participates in the regulation of several physiological functions, including the function of cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and central nervous systems. sGC stimulators could not only directly stimulate s GC but also synergistically act with NO to increase the sGC enzyme activity, which has shown a great potential to treat various diseases via regulating the NO-s GC-cGMP signaling pathway. Here, we give an overview of NOindependent sGC stimulators in clinical trial.

ABSTRACT

In the Chinese national nutrition surveys, fortified foods were not investigated separately from the base diet, and the contribution of fortified foods to micronutrients intake is not very clear. This study investigated the diet, including fortified foods and food supplements, of urban pregnant women and analyzed the intake of calcium, iron, and zinc to assess the corresponding contributions of fortified foods, food supplements, and the base diet. The results demonstrated that the base diet was the major source of calcium, iron, and zinc, and was recommended to be the first choice for micronutrients intake. Furthermore, consumption of fortified foods and food supplements offered effective approaches to improve the dietary intake of calcium, iron, and zinc in Chinese urban pregnant women.
